Welcome to Ewen McColl

I am delighted to welcome Dr Ewen McColl, Honorary Consultant/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor at the Peninsula Dental School, University of Plymouth to the Editorial Board of Dental Update.

Ewen graduated from the University of Edinburgh Dental School 30 years ago, having first completed a BSc(Hons) at Glasgow University. He completed his Vocational Training in Aldershot and remained in the Defence Dental Service (DDS) for 18 years, while also undertaking specialist training in Periodontology at the Eastman Dental Institute, London, and Restorative Dentistry speciality training at Guy’s Hospital, before becoming Consultant in Restorative Dentistry for the DDS in 2009.

Ewen joined the Peninsula Dental School in 2012, becoming Director of Clinical Dentistry in 2014 and Deputy Head of School in 2017. Among other senior leadership positions held by Ewen, he is Chair Elect of the Association of Dental Hospitals UK and Ireland, and an Editor of FGDP (now CGDent) Standards in Dentistry.

I am delighted that Ewen has agreed to join us as I am certain that his clinical experience and knowledge, particularly in the field of restorative dentistry, let alone by his prolific writing on many areas of dentistry, will complement the knowledge, wisdom and expertise already present in the Editorial Board of Dental Update.

Dr McColl commented:

Dental Update has been essential reading at every stage of my career, and now having qualified 30 years ago, it is a great honour for me to join the Editorial Board, consisting of the leading lights of UK dentistry. This honour is of extra significance given that this is Dental Update’s 50th anniversary, with the journal remaining as significant today as it was 50 years ago, particularly to hard-pressed clinicians in general dental practice, where most clinicians work.

Looking to the future, with every UK dental school subscribing to Dental Update online, and over 100 international dental schools offering Dental Update to future clinicians, I hope to have influence on the future of dentistry across the globe.
