Understanding the Socket Shield Technique in Implant Dentistry: A Case Report

From Volume 49, Issue 9, October 2022 | Pages 726-730

Abstract

Various techniques have been described to reduce the post-extraction collapse of the ridge prior to dental implant therapy. The socket shield technique has become more popular since its introduction in 2010. This article outlines the steps taken in this process, to preserve the buccal portion of the root while extracting the remainder of the tooth and placing an implant. The rationale for this procedure is to maintain the periodontal fibres along the buccal aspect, preventing the resorption of the bundle bone. This prevents the collapse of the ridge, resulting in an improved aesthetic outcome.
