Abstract: Risk assessment is vital for preventive dental care and validated technologies exist that enable the dental professional to assess a patient’s risk of developing periodontal disease. Information personalized to individual patients can be presented in a simplified format, which patients can understand, enabling them to make informed decisions on, and start taking responsibility for, their oral health.

Clinical relevance: This paper aims to explain the importance, purpose and impact of periodontal risk assessment in contemporary dental practice, where a focus on prevention and personalized biofeedback is an ethical and cost-effective way forward.

Author notes: Liz Chapple, BA(Hons), Director, Oral Health Innovations Ltd (UK supplier of PreViserTM and DEPPA technology) and Iain Chapple, PhD, BDS, FDS RCPS, FDS RCS, CCST(Rest Dent), Professor of Periodontology and Consultant in Restorative Dentistry, Head of School of Dentistry and Periodontal Research Group, College of Medical and Dental Sciences and Birmingham Community Healthcare Foundation Trust, Birmingham Dental School, 5 Mill Pool Way, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B5 7EG, UK.

During this webinar Eoin O’Sullivan will take you through his personal journey with digital scanning, explaining how he found himself in a dilemma when he had to replace his first iTero, after he had assumed that the scanner’s capabilities would transition to focus on orthodontics when it was bought out by Align Technology in March 2011. He will share his thoughts about which scanner would best suit his restorative practice, and why he opted for the next generation of iTero over all the other scanners on the market.
